Beijing Olympics Gives Birth To English Clubs

With the Beijing Olympics fast approaching, more and more Chinese citizens are eager to learn English. English Clubs have sprouted in Beijing and across China to promote English instruction.

Libraries and neighbourhood centres are encouraged to host english club get-togethers so that citizens can welcome Olympic visitors this summer. As of January this year, tens of thousands have volunteered to take part in the "welcoming" committee.

But even after the Beijing Olympics, English clubs will continue to prosper as more and more people are fascinated with the English language. They gather in more than 400 locations all over Beijing to learn and speak English.

As for young professionals, honing their English skills gives a better chance at the job market. A good command of English means getting promotion more quickly.

To promote English as the language of mutual cooperation, the Chinese government has made studying the English Language compulsory at age 9 but Beijing gives it an earlier start at age 6.

It is said that more than 100 million students are studying English in elementary,high school, and college.
